Detecting photons with Rydberg atoms

چکیده

Unlike all other quantum technology platforms, photonics encodes quantum information without noise at room temperature, without the need for high vacuum, pumping / cooling, or magnetic / electrical shielding. Frustratingly, these advantages must be sacrificed when high-efficiency photon counting is required, as >95% photo-detection efficiency is only available via superconducting photo-detectors [1]. However, there is no fundamental principle that prevents efficient photodetection in ambient conditions: the effective temperature T eff = hc /λk B of a telecomms C-band photon (λ = 1550 nm) is >9000 K.

22.1.1 Rydber Atoms in a Magnetic Field We have produced Rydberg atoms in a lithium atomic beam using cw dye lasers, and developed the technology for detecting these atoms with electric field ionization. These advances have brought us close to the point where we can start carrying out high resolution measurements on highly excited atoms in a strong magnetic field by cw laser spectroscopy. photo...

Rydberg polaritons and Rydberg superatoms - Novel tools for quantum nonlinear optics

Mapping the strong interaction between Rydberg excitations in ultra-cold atomic ensembles onto single photons enables the realization of optical nonlinearities which can modify light on the level of individual photons. This novel approach forms the basis of a growing Rydberg quantum optics toolbox, which already contains photonic logic building-blocks such as single-photon sources, switches, tr...

Dipolar exchange induced transparency with Rydberg atoms

A three-level atomicmedium can bemade transparent to a resonant probe field in the presence of a strong control field acting on an adjacent atomic transition to a long-lived state, which can be represented by a highly excited Rydberg state. The long-range interactions between theRydberg state atoms then translate into strong, non-local, dispersive or absorptive interactions between the probe ph...

Comment on testing Bell’s inequality with Rydberg atoms entangled through cavity photons

Rydberg atoms traversing a micromaser cavity one after the other can emerge in correlated states, and according to standard Copenhagen quantum mechanics this may lead to a violation of Bell’s inequality, that is, to a Bell sum S>2. S is here calculated in various ideal physical situations including those with (1) different initial states of the atoms, (2) different free adjustable parameters, b...

Enhancement of Rydberg-mediated single-photon nonlinearities by electrically tuned Förster resonances

Mapping the strong interaction between Rydberg atoms onto single photons via electromagnetically induced transparency enables manipulation of light at the single-photon level and few-photon devices such as all-optical switches and transistors operated by individual photons. Here we demonstrate experimentally that Stark-tuned Förster resonances can substantially increase this effective interacti...

Coherent Excitation of Rydberg Atoms in Thermal Vapor Microcells

The coherent control of mesoscopic ensembles of atoms and Rydberg atom blockade are the basis for proposed quantum devices such as integrable gates and single photon sources. So far, experimental progress has been limited to complex experimental setups that use ultracold atoms. Here, we show that coherence times of ∼ 100 ns are achievable with coherent Rydberg atom spectroscopy in μm sized ther...
